National Day and Malaysia Day

Malaysia has a unique celebration of Independence. On the 31st of August each year, the country observes the National Day, otherwise known as Merdeka or Independence Day. A fortnight later on September 16th, the country observes Malaysia Day which is the date when East Malaysian states Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaysia in 1963.

Two significant dates for Malaysia’s independence

Previously, National Day was celebrated by the entire country while Malaysia Day was only celebrated in East Malaysia. It was only a few years ago that the government of Malaysia announced that Malaysia Day be celebrated by all in the country.

National Day Celebrations

Each year, National Day is observed and celebrated in a large scale. This is where the Dataran Merdeka or Independence Square in Kuala Lumpur is closed to vehicles for a National Day Parade attended by prominent leaders and people from all walks of life.
This is the same place where independence of the country was declared in 1957 by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first prime minister of Malaysia. On certain years, the National Day parade is held away from Kuala Lumpur in other states but is held in the same capacity and scale.

Malaysia Day Celebrations

2 weeks after National Day, Malaysia Day is observed. This is a very significant date especially for the people from East Malaysia because prior to 16th September 1963, Sabah and Sarawak was not part of Malaysia. It was only after this that it became part of the larger country and both have since benefited economically and socially ever since.

Malaysia Day is commemorated with much fanfare very similar to National Day which is usually held in East Malaysia. There will be traditional and cultural performances, parades, events and other activities held throughout this public holiday.

Christmas Day

Christmas Day is held on the 25th of November every year across the world. It is to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. This is a commemorative and symbolic date as the actual birth date is still unknown.

Most significant date for Christians

Christians, including Catholics commemorate Christmas day in large scales across the world. This is the same in Malaysia where church bells are heard and churches congregate to remember the birth of Christ and the joy that He brought to the world.

How is Christmas celebrated?

For centuries, Christmas has been celebrated with much fanfare where presents are given and opened, turkeys are consumed and parties are filled with drinks and people being merry. In the churches meanwhile, a more solemn mood is usually found with hymns and prayer.

Date of Christmas

Christmas day is held in accordance to the Gregorian calendar. It is deemed as the most important day for the Christian faith which signify the birth of the Saviour. Each church usually has their own traditions on how Christmas is celebrated. It includes fasting, singing, caroling and such.

Common practices of Christmas

During Christmas Day, Christians will go to their church in the early hours of the morning where they will have a session of worship and praise. After that, there will usually be a feast either in the church or at the homes of families and friends.
People from other faiths usually visit Christians at their open houses during Christmas or on the days before or after this festival. Besides Christians, it is very common to see pubs and clubs having Christmas parties during the eve of this festival. This is where party-goers will be drinking till the wee hours of morning where they will then countdown to Christmas Day which will lead to New Year’s Day a week later.

Deepavali

Deepavali is one of the several festivals observed in large scale across Malaysia by the Indian community. It is considered as one of the most sacred events of the Tamil calendar.

Significant date for Indians

Like other parts of the world, Deepavali is a significant date for the Indians in Malaysia. Originally, it is known as Diwali and is still being regarded as so. Diwali actually means the Festival of Lights which is why you will see a lot of oil lamps being used during this day.

Celebration of good over evil

The underlying principle of Deepavali is the observing of victory of good over evil. In some stories, it signifies the triumph of light over darkness. In ancient times, Deepavali is observed around autumn each year. In the modern calendar, it is held around October or November each year.

New clothes and new homes

The actual day of Deepavali is actually on the Lunisolar Hindu month of Kartik. This occurs when the new moon night of the year is at its darkest. In Malaysia, Hindus observe similar practices as other parts of the world. This includes decorating their homes with glitter and gold as well as shopping and wearing of new clothes.

Common practices of Deepavali

Since Deepavali is the Festival of Lights, candles and oil lamps are used to illuminate homes, temples and places of work. Common practices include making offerings to the Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. In the morning of this festival, Hindus will visit temples and shrines where they will carry out their duties in prayer and offerings.
In Malaysia, people from other races will visit their Indian families during Deepavali where they get to savour a lot of Indian food and cuisine. Prominent people and ministers are known to hold open houses as well to connect with the people on the ground.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri

Muslims across the world observe their new year through Hari Raya. In Malaysia, it is known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Aidilfitri end of Ramadan

Muslims observe a month of fasting during the month of Ramadan. After that, they celebrate the Festival of Breaking Fast. This is known as the Eid Al-fitr which is known as Sweet Festival and Sugar Feast in other parts of the world.

The Islamic Calendar

Unlike other festivals, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is not so much about the new year. It comes as the Syawal month of the calendar. Since Muslims observe 30 days of fasting, they will subsequently celebrate 30 days of Aidilfitri.

Common practices on Aidilfitr

In Malaysia, Hari Raya Aidlifitri is known as Hari Raya Puasa although it is not so commonly used these days. During the first day of the festival, the Muslims will wake up early in the morning. They will then visit the mosque where they offer thanks for their blessings and some visit the family’s grave to pay respect.

Dressed to their best on Hari Raya

Muslims will be dressed up to their best in traditional baju melayu, baju kurung, kebaya and such during this festival. The children will visit their parents to seek forgiveness which they will then get ‘duit raya’. This refers to green packets with small amounts of money inside as a gift given out during Hari Raya.

Malaysians are known to host open houses during Hari Raya. This is where people from all walks of life will visit the homes of Muslim families where they will be served with sumptuous spreads of Malay food like Nasi Lemak, Ketupat, Ayam Masak Merah and others. Meanwhile, you will find that there are many corporate companies that host such events too where they invite their customers, partners and employees to a day of feasting and celebrations.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is one of the most significant yearly celebrations observed by the Chinese community worldwide. In Malaysia, the Chinese community observes this festival known as the Lunar New Year.

Most important celebration for Chinese

Following the Lunar Calendar based on the 12 zodiac signs, Chines New Year usually comes around in the beginning of the year. It could be as early as mid-January or into the middle of February of every year.

Significant days of Chinese New Year

The first day of the new year is most important. To the Chinese, it signifies a new start to the year where everything could possibly be new. Some would visit temples. On the eve of the first day, the entire family usually come together for a reunion dinner which is regarded as one of the most important events for any family. Many would travel from overseas home for this dinner.

Common practices of Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days. From the first day, the families will wish each other with prosperous and kind phrases. There is no place for negative vibes. Children wear new clothes and homes are spring-cleaned to signify renewed hopes and dreams.

Red is the most common colour during Chinese New Year. As such, you would see a lot of homes decorated with red cloth on the doors and gates, red buntings and others. The elders will give red packets (known as Ang Pow) to the kids and unmarried for good luck. Red firecrackers are lit and heard across homes.

On the fifteenth day, Chinese New Year concludes with the observation of Chap Goh Mei (translated as fifteenth night). This is commonly known as the lover’s day for the Chinese. Single women will throw mandarin oranges in the river with their names in the hope of finding their life-partners.

Guide to tipping in restaurants

Tipping has often been a tough decision to make in our daily lives. Believe it or not, people actually remembers if you are a good or bad tipper which is why you sometimes get really bad services at certain restaurants despite having patronage those places for years. So how should you tip? Or better still, should you even tip?

Not compulsory to tip in Malaysia

In certain countries, tipping is almost ‘mandatory’. In Malaysia however, the situation is slightly different because there are the Sales and Services Tax which constitutes to about 10 to 15% of the bill depending on the place while the GST Malaysia has change the situation considerably.

Rule of Thumb to tipping

The rule of thumb is to leave about 10 to 15% of the total bill as the standard tipping rate but no one will fault you if you do not leave anything at all besides being called the ‘bad tipper’. This is if you think you have not been accorded the service you deserve as a customer in the outlet.

When to tip more?

There are situations when you should tip more and that might be above 10-15% of the total bill. Although this is not mandatory, you could decide to do so when:

  1. If you are dining there with a large group of people (5 or more), then it would be good to leave a larger tip.
  2. This should be practiced if you are in an upscale restaurant or in those romantic restaurants you go to impress your other half.
  3. Other times when you should give more is when you have a lot of ‘specialized’ requests and when you were there for a long time. If you like your server (with no ulterior motives) for a great job, then leave a larger tip.

When should you NOT tip!

On the other hand, you can leave little or NO tip if you think you have been shortchanged for the service you paid for. If the server (waiter) has been rude and the food was bad, then forget about tipping altogether.

Having said that, always remember that a lot of the servers and waiters rely on tips for a higher bring-home pay but if they do not deserve it, then it is okay. Tipping is always the choice of the customer.
