Malaysia is known to have one of best transportation systems in the region although it is still inferior to the likes of Singapore and Japan. One must however be aware that the reputation is gained through its well connected highways that ferry people to and from all the states around the country. Here is where one is able to find many highway concessionaires operating and maintaining the highways that include PLUS, ELITE, KESAS and many others.

Rail Transportation in Malaysia

Malaysia’s rail service is one of the most complete and connects most major cities around the Peninsular Malaysia. There are a few types of rail services in the country which encompasses the heavy rail, light rail and monorail services respectively, each of which services a specific group of commuters. Where this is concerned, the heavy rail service usually has more coaches and goes for a longer distance while the light rail services all have fewer coaches and are usually utilized for short distance travelling in within the vicinity of the city. At the moment, the light rail services focused in Klang Valley while there are proposals for similar systems to be built in other major cities like Penang and Malacca where the latter has embarked on the construction of an Aerorail service.

The heavy rail service is operated by KTMB (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad) which basically serves the intercity routes and destinations. It connects the major cities from KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur to other cities like Butterworth towards the north and Johor Bahru towards the south as well as towards the east coast too. Apart from ferrying people between the cities, the KTMB service also ferries freight and cargo as well. While most of the states in Peninsular Malaysia is connected by KTMB, there is only one rail service in East Malaysia which is in Sabah. The KTMB service that connects Peninsular Malaysia extends towards the country of Singapore as well as towards the north into Thailand.

There are 2 light rail services which operates in the Klang Valley. This is where the LRT (Light Rail Transit) offers service to commute passengers in within the Klang Valley which encompasses Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya as well as other suburbs like Ampang. It is served by 2 main lines, namely the Kelana Jaya Line and Ampang Line. The former connects most places around the Petaling Jaya area from KL Sentral while the latter connects towards the south which heads out towards Maluri, Ampang and its surrounding areas.

Apart from the LRT, there is another rail service which is the KL Monorail which services commuters and the people around the Kuala Lumpur city center. This is a shorter network which carries lesser passengers but usually connects most major spots in the city. This is considered to be one of the most convenient modes of transport for tourists who would like to see the city from the top as the rail is built above the roads connecting 11 of its stations that include Bukit Bintang, Imbi and others.

The Malaysian government had recently announced that a new rail service will be constructed which will provide more space and ferry more passengers. This is known as the KVMRT or Klang Valley Mass Railway Transit which will offer a new public transportation system to the people in Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding areas. The project will start in 2012 which will then complement the current rail systems already available.

Road Transportation in Malaysia

Where this is concerned, this means that it is naturally very easy if one is heading from one region to another and the situation is slightly different as compared to getting around in the major towns and cities. This is because it is somewhat difficult to understand how the public transportation works especially if one is in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia and the situation is similar in other major cities like Georgetown in Penang and Johor Bahru in Johor.

The best way for anyone to get around is to hail a taxi as bus services can be hard to understand at times. Unless you are very familiar with the regions and routes of these services, chances are you would get lost when traveling. On the other hand, you could also rent a vehicle or engage a chauffeur driven car who will be able to take you to where you want to go and what you want to see.

From the major cities, you could then take express buses which will ferry you to the outskirts and other towns in the many states around the country. This can be done at the few main terminals in the Klang Valley like Puduraya, the Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in Bandar Tasik Selatan or Terminal Bas Putra.

Another option that you can get to other towns and cities is by flying. This is where you will find one of the best budget airlines in the world, which is the award winning AirAsia which services most domestic routes that connect the entire country. AirAsia is an affordable and convenient service which will get you to most of the states while the national airline, Malaysian Airlines also has its own budget carrier, FireFly.

If you are visiting the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, it is highly recommended that you rent a 4WD vehicle if you plan to head out to the rural areas because some of the roads are not as developed as those in the cities like Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Miri. Apart from that, it is also one of the best and most adventurous ways to see the rural areas of the states.

If you like, you can also take the national rail service operated by KTMB (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad) which connects most major cities in Peninsular Malaysia. Here is where you can take your time to go around the states and alight where you like because the rail services basically joins the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia and the south in Johor Bahru before it heads out to Singapore.

Business Class

Within the Business Class Coach, there are three sections. One section is called Royal and it is with 5 seats. Seat 1A is with the full leg room, the other 4 (Seat 1B, 1C, 5B, 5C) is with large leg room (please refer to the seating plan for orientation).

For the Premier Section (Business Class Only), there is 13 seats and they are in the mid section of the coach.

For the Deluxe Section Business Class Only, there is 5 seats. It is at the rear of the coach and it is close to the gally.

What meals do you serve on board?
 Our menu changes everyday, we serve Western and Asian meals.
 Do I have to pay for my meal?
No, it is part of your coach ticket. However, if you need more F&B services, we have them available via our Aireshoppe. Please request from our Cabin Crew on duty when on board.

Can I request for vegetarian food?
Yes, we can arrange for vegetarian food if you advise us in advance during our counter’s operational hours and more than 2 ½ hours from the trip.

 Can I bring my own food and drinks?
No outside food and drink allowed on board.

 Where does the sun face?
The sun (east to west) on the way from KUL to SIN in the morning and the sun (west to east) on the way from KUL to SIN (in the afternoon). It is the reverse for the passenger if the passenger is traveling from SIN to KUL (in the morning) and SIN to KUL (in the afternoon).

 What is AIREreflexSPA?
AIREreflexSPA is a reflexology services which we provide in our Executive Class and Business Class. Please enquire at the counters.

How can I book it?
You can book AIREreflexSPA when you buy a coach ticket. It is subject to availability. You can also book it through the cabin crew if slots are available during the journey.

What is AIREshoppe?
This is where you are able to purchase selected items on the coach. The list of items varies and is subject to availability. You are also welcome to advise us of items that you feel may be good to also be made available for sale on board of the coach.

How long is the journey?
The journey takes approximately 5 hours. We will make a midway rest for a maximum of 10 minutes toilet stop. This stop is not for meals other than to allow for the pilots to change over or for passengers who wish to have a quick stretch and to utilize the rest stop toilets.

Can I board or alight at points along the journey?
No, passengers cannot board or alight at any point along the way. However, passengers are allowed to alight at the 2nd link causeway subject to signing the consent form.

What is the average speed limit?
90km/hour and can be accelerated up to maximum of 108km/hour during over taking is the provision for our pilots. Otherwise, our Coach Pilots are to adhere to the prevailing traveling speeds as that stipulated by the two countries authorities.
What is the estimated traveling time?
The estimated traveling time is 5 hours (+/-). The traveling time is largely affected by the traffic conditions along the highway as well as at the Malaysian and Singapore Immigration. This is especially so during the School Holidays and Public Holidays.

What is the alcohol/cigarette allowance at the customs?
There are no allowances for liquor/alcohol at the customs. Only cigarettes (1 opened pack) may be allowed at the customs. The relevant duties apply when you make the declaration. Fines will be imposed if you do not declare such items and will caused delays in clearance.

Airebus will not hold the responsibility and reserve the right to leave the customer at the custom check point.

* If you have VISA or customs problems, please inform our Cabin Crew immediately so that they can help you. If they are unable to resolve them, the Coach will need to leave you behind and when you have sorted the immigration or VISA, you can catch the next available coach if there are seats, otherwise, you will need to take you own transport.

Do I need valid traveling documents?
Yes, please make sure that you bring along your valid passport before you travel to your designated location. Valid Passport should be still valid for at least 6 months before expiry time.

Do I need a visa?
It is very important to check if visas are required for your journey because you may be refused entry without a visa and we cannot be held responsible for consequences if access is not granted or if access is delayed due to visa requirements. Singaporeans and Malaysian do not need visas.

Will I be stranded if the coach breaks down?
Airebus shall endeavor to transport you to your final destination/adjacent to your destination by another air-conditioned coach at the shortest time possible. The selection of the coaches will be left to the discretion of our Coach Pilot on duty as when the coach is to breakdown. Our commitment is to transfer you to the city in the fastest possible time by using our coaches or our partners coaches.

What time does the counter operate?
The counter operating hours are as listed on the welcome page of the website.
What time does the call center operate?
The call center operating hours are between 9am to 5pm daily. You can also attain the specific counter numbers via the website.
 What is e-ticketing?

Do you have packages?
For packages on hotel and/or preferred hotel/coach, please call our Customer Service Officer (CSO) to assist you. We have working arrangements with a Clubtravel Sdn. Bhd. (KKKP4385) (Formerly known as Premium Gold Travel and Tours Sdn. Bhd.) under the brand of clubtravel to assist you with the packages and private arrangements.
Why is there a surcharge for Executive Class Lower-Deck?
There is a surcharge for Executive Class Lower-deck because of the additional space and comfort you get when compared with Upper-deck. Lower-deck is also more comfortable thus you’ll be able to enjoy your own privacy while traveling.
Why is the Business Class with 3 classes with the same coach?
The Business Class is designed to provide luxury to our customer in a more comfortable way. There are 5 seats for the Royal Class, 13 seats for the Premier Class and 5 seats for the Deluxe Class. The Royal Class has a better view and more spacious leg room and the deluxe class is closer to the Gally area at the rear of the coach while the Premier Class is at the mid section of the coach. There are differing surcharge costs with every class.
Can I use credit card to pay for the tickets?
Yes, you can. You can purchase the tickets via our counters. You can pay using Visa or Master Card or Diners or American Express in Malaysian Counters, and in the Singapore Counters, you can pay via Master Card, Visa and Nets, other than paying cash in either counter locations.
What if my ticket has an error?
It will be the responsibility of our personal at the respective counters. Please check with the counter before you are to leave the counter for the accuracy of your ticket purchases as we cannot be responsible after you are to leave the counter.
Do I get a meal if I purchase tickets less than 2hrs 30mins before the departure time?
Airebus is not able to serve you with a normal meal if tickets are purchase less than 2 hours and 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time (and referring this to our counter operating hours). However, instant meals will be served as replacement.

Tickets will only be sold upon your agreement to this minor change to the menu.
What is an instant meal?
Instant meal consists of the followings: 1 cup of instant noodle and 1 bar of cookies or 2 bars of cookies or its equivalent.
 Will the call made to the call center recorded?
Yes. For continuous improvement and audit, the recording will be made for 90 days on all calls between the call center and customers.
Can the coach wait for me if I turn up late?
Our coaches leave on time and with a standard practice of 5 minutes waiting allowance. Please turn up at least 20 minutes before departure. Airebus will not be held responsible if you do not come on time.

For those who bought tickets on-line or via call centre, you are also required to turn up at least 30 minutes before departure time to get the ticket printed and to show your identity card for verification.
 Can I change my travel date and time?
You may change your scheduled travel date on condition that 72 hours notice is given. E.g. If your original departure is on Sat, you need to advise us by Monday.

Administration charges of MYR10.00 for ticket purchased in Kuala Lumpur and SGD5.00 for ticket purchased in Singapore, will be imposed including those purchased on the internet.
Can I get a refund for cancellations?
We do not give refunds for cancellations. No cancellation allowed.
What happens if I don’t show up?
If you fail to board the coach on time or fail to board the coach by the time the coach departs, the ticket is not refundable or exchangeable. This includes of you boarding the coach on the wrong schedule. You will also not be allowed on the coach as we have many set requirements in ensuring that the logistics for each and every passenger is looked into.

However if you wish to board on an earlier coach than your confirmed travelling time, you may do so if you agree to pay for the amendment fees as well as accept an instant meal served to you onboard. You cannot travel after the confirmed travelling date on the ticket because the ticket will not be valid after the travelling date, thus no further amendments can be made.
What are the baggage sizes allowed?
The weight of your baggage must not be more than 20kg and the size is limited to 28? width, 9? height and 22? length for Executive Class. You are allowed to have double the baggage requirements for the Business Class.

 What is the carry-on-board baggage allowance?
We allow one piece of hand-carried luggage not bigger than 30cm x 20cm x 20cm. Only camera bag or shopping bag is allowed to carry on board.
Do I need to check-in before boarding the coach?
No. Check-in is not required. However, it is more important to sit in the respective designated location that is visible for our cabin crew to call on you, i.e. at the lounge or adjacent to the pick-up/drop-off points.
If I accidentally left something behind, will I be able to find it?
Yes! If your personal belonging is found, we shall safe-keep it until you make your claim that is within 3 days from the date that we are to find them. However, if we are unaware of the item and we have not seen the item; we will not be able to be liable for the item nor will we be responsible for it.

Airports in Malaysia

Air transportation in Malaysia is very vibrant because of the fact that the country is one of the most visited countries globally. Getting in by plane is very easy as there are both international and domestic airports.

Types of Airports in Malaysia

Generally, there are 2 types of airports for travelling around Malaysia. The international ones are those that are usually operating in major capitals, cities and towns. Meanwhile, there are those that are smaller and serves only the domestic routes of airlines.

KLIA and klia2 Airports

The KLIA and klia2 international airports are the major air transportation hubs in the Klang Valley. They are the main airports that provide international and domestic flights among travellers. KLIA is the home of national carrier Malaysian Airlines. It is considered as the primary air gateway in and out of the country.

The klia2 meanwhile is the low-cost carrier terminal that serves the likes of Air Asia, Malindo Airlines and other budget carriers. Besides connecting with international destinations, it is used for passengers flying within the country.

The Subang International Airport or Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah is located in Subang, Selangor. Formerly the main terminal, it is now used mainly by MAS’ Firefly Airlines that travel to domestic destinations and several international stops.

Airports in the Northern Region

The northern region of Peninsular Malaysia is served by several international airports in the major states. Penang has its own Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas which is about 15 minutes from the main city centre of Georgetown.

In Kedah, international air travelers come in through the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport. The Langkawi International Airport is used by those coming into Langkawi Island for travel and other major events. Langkawi and Penang both represents two of the busiest airports in the northern region mainly because Penang is known to be a very dynamic economic hub.

As for Pulau Langkawi, it hosts the annual Langkawi Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition and is one of the top travel destinations in Malaysia. As such, travelers fly in directly to the international airport here without having to negate through other hubs.

Southern and Eastern Region

The Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport in Terengganu is a major hub although it does not have a lot of international connections. Further to the north east is the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport which serves the capital of Kelantan, Kota Baru.

Meanwhile, the Senai International Airport in Johor is one of the busiest airports in Malaysia. It connects with countries like Thailand, Indonesia and other international destinations as well as those within Malaysia. Furthermore, it is close to Singapore and at times would be cheaper to fly into Johor Bahru before travelling over to Singapore on land.

Airports in East Malaysia

Over in East Malaysia, Sabah houses the Kota Kinabalu International Airport which connects with many domestic and international destinations worldwide. Sarawak has 2 international airports which are the Miri International Airport and Kuching International Airport.

Domestic Airports around Malaysia

In terms of domestic airports, there is an average of one in every state except Perlis and Negeri Sembilan. The domestic airports are used for air travel between towns and cities around Malaysia. Some airports are smaller than others and are used only for cargo purposes.

Peninsular Malaysia

The Bernam Airfield is located in Perak which has the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport as well. Selangor mainly operates the 3 international airports. Meanwhile, Malacca has the Malacca Airport in Batu Berendam while Johor houses the Mersing Airport for domestic travels. This is the same with Pahang’s Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport in Kuantan.

In the eastern coast, Kerteh Airport operates in Terengganu as well as the Redang Airport. Other stops around the islands include the Tioman Airport in Pahang and the Pangkor Airport in Perak.

Domestic airports in East Malaysia

East Malaysia has many domestic airports. These hubs are used for air travel not only between towns but towards the rural areas too. Sabah has its own Kota Kinabalu International Airport as well as the Keningau Airport, Kudat Airport, Layang Layang Airport and a quite popular one in Lahad Datu.

Besides that, other domestic hubs here include one in Long Pasia, Hutan Bakau Pamol, Ranau, Sahabat, Sandakan, Sepulot, Tomanggong, Tawau and Semporna that leads to Sipadan Islands.

Over in Sarawak, domestic airports include Ba’Kelalan, Bario, Belaga, Bintulu, Kapit, Lawas, Limbang, Marudi, Mukah, Mulu, Sematan, Sibu, Sri Aman and many more in the Long areas. This includes Long Sukang, Long Semado, Long Leliang, Long Banga, Long Akah and such. Most of the flights that travel to the rural areas are served and operated by MASWings.
