History of The Fairview heritage house – Joint collaboration with Tourism Malaysia

The Fairview was built after the Japanese invasion (World War II 1945) by the talented chinese architect and businessman Tan Sri Datuk William Tan.

This historical building was planned by him to be a focal point for his many functions when he was serving as the 1st president of Kuching Municipal Council (1956-1959), speaker of the Dewan Undangan Negeri (State Legislative assembly) and also as his own residence.

Besides being a politician and successful businessman in outdoor advertising – he shines as a great humanitarian devoting many years as the chairman of the “Malaysian Red Crescent”, the “Sarawak Society for the Blind” and other social work in Sarawak. The late Tan Sri, who was also the first pilot of Sarawak, lived in The Fairview until 1996.

In 2003 “The Fairview” turned into a guest house. The old style and atmosphere of the house has been kept until today – you will enjoy it!

Kuching – a hidden treasure in the northwest of Borneo

Kuching is the state capital of Sarawak with a population of app. 600,000. It is a beautiful and clean city surrounded by rivers and national parks. The old city centre is located at the waterfront of Sarawak River.

Kuching is famous for its multi culture. Traditional local groups – Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Orang Ulu, Kayan, Kenyah and Kelabit living in harmony together with Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indonesian. In Kuching you will find Mosques, Churches, Buddhist and Hindu temples near to each other.

Along the beautiful waterfront are many old Chinese shop houses where you can buy art crafts and local souvenirs. Little restaurants, cafes and tea houses are scattered around this area.

In the Sarawak Museum you can spend hours to learn about the local culture and their life in the past and also about the variety of animals of Borneo.

The famous Weekend Market opens from friday night until Sunday noon. The market boasts a huge variety of jungle fruit, local food, fish, sea creatures and much more. Even sago worms, sea horse crabs, snakes, palm hearts, wild honey, fermented insects and other specialties are sold there. So don’t miss it and take your time to explore!

Kuching is also known for food! Local food stores, Western, Chinese, Malay, Indian and Thai restaurants are easy to spot. A famous place is “Top Spot” on top of a parking house with at least 10 different food stalls for sea food you may never seen before.

Nightlife in Kuching is mostly happening around the cat statue and around the Hilton hotel. Some places away from the city centre are famous for dancing and Karaoke. Meet young folks at the ladies nights in Merdeka Palace and at the pub on top of the Civic Centre. A meeting point where you can have a beer before you start your night is the popular SOHO pub next to the cat statue. More information is available in the Kuching Guide.

Fairview tropical garden

A big beautiful tropical garden stretched around the whole property. Here you can look at many different plants, flowers and observe some animals. There are huge palm trees in front of the guesthouse, orchids, pitcher plants, and a small pepper plantation. You can also find more than 6 different types of local fruit trees planted in our garden such as rambutan, mango, pineapple, sour sop, guava, banana, and papaya trees.

Next to the guesthouse is a big fish pond with tropical fish and water lilies. Early in the morning you can observe many birds like sunbirds (similar to colibri), magpie robin, rails, and different species of squirrels, monitor lizards, huge butterflies and many other tropical animals. At night there are some frogs croaking and during the rainy season if you are lucky you can even spot turtles walking around the garden!
