The town center of Seremban is quite safe to go around during the day as it is constantly filled with vehicles and pedestrians. However, at night fall, the town center can be quite quiet with only a handful of cars and cafes open. On weekend nights, illegal street racers can be seen around the likes of Jalan Dato Lee Foong Yee while the backlanes around the town center should be avoided altogether.

Seremban facts and culture

Seremban, the capital of Negeri Sembilan started development back in 1870s when locals discovered tin ore within the vicinity. Following the discovery of tin in some areas, a number of Arab, Chinese and Malay immigrants flocked to the city to work on the mines. Formerly known as Sungai Ujong, the centre flourished as a major mining area in the state. Hence, Linggi River was later transformed as an outlet to import tin and products to other parts of country. Rapid development in Seremban led to rows of shop houses built along several major streets namely Murray Road (now known as Jalan Kapitan Tam Yeong), Birch Road (Jalan Dato’ Bandar Tunggal) and Lemon Street (Jalan Tuanku Munawir).

And how Seremban got its name? From a local favourite pastime, Sarimban where children will throw pebbles into air and caught it back with their palms (popularly known as Batu Seremban). By 1916, population in Seremban shot up to 20,000. To accommodate the growing number of residents in town, more shop houses were built along Jalan Datuk Lee Fong Yee (formerly known as Cameron Road) and Jalan Tun Dr Ismail (Setul Road).
